Rereading Golden Doves after almost twenty years, to see what I understand better and what ideas I still find persuasive.

It’s a trip. Every page has an insight or claim that resonates deeply. The book is full of associations, parallels, and references that, for the careful reader, are mind-blowing to consider and transform one’s understanding of key terms and concepts in Judaism. R Faur z”l was highly intelligent, very creative, and extremely well-read.

But every page also has a tendentious claim presented nakedly or features a binary polemic that seems labored, totalizing, and at times self-contradictory. Arguments undermine each other (and sometimes the overarching claims of the book). I’ve long said that Faur the polemicist is surpassed by Faur the exponent, and it shows no less in this early work.

After twenty years, I understand why R Faur z”l had trouble getting his ideas accepted by academia: it’s not all due to Ashkenormative bias.

But after twenty years, I’m glad to see that this book, which was so impactful on my understanding of rabbinics, language, and culture, still has a lot to offer the critical reader. I’m looking forward to continuing this read and to returning to the book repeatedly in the future.

Addendum: I’ll also say that the conversations I’ve had with ChatGPT about this book and about R Faur’s ideas in general, have been very illuminating. In particular, my exploration of the intersection of semiotics and metaphysics has been quite thought-provoking.

Rambamist Elitism

Why do Rambamists write so many posts about how other Jewish people are basically idolators?

What does this actually accomplish?

Is it possible that to whatever extent Rambam may have been something somewhat approaching a philosophical elitist, emulating that tendency may not actually be productive towards promoting Torah, or in the cases of most people who aren’t Rambam, even warranted?

* Asking as someone who believes that the Mishne Tora is the best guide to halakha and that philosophy is the key to understanding the Torah and having a real relationship with the Creator, and who prays according to siddur haRambam.

Why the Mishne Tora Threatened Power

Bar Nativ comes very close in this article.

He definitely gets the main idea of the Mishne Tora – to create a definitive, encyclopedic textbook of the Jewish legal system for practical use – but misses the main point of why such a book is valuable.

Not (just) to resolve disputes by providing information – but in doing so to free Jewish communities from the political monopoly of the Geonate and from the local tyranny of poorly educated rabbis pushing their personal opinions as law from Sinai.

And from this it’s clear why the book faced so much opposition. Not (just) because Rambam’s jurisprudence and Talmudic hermeneutic were opaque to some (but by no means most) of his readers, mamy of whom were often accustomed to a variety of practices and policies at odds with what he recorded.

But because the very existence of the book itself threatened the stranglehold of bad leaders using their knowledge to consolidate power and relying on the relative ignorance of the communities dependant upon them, for their continued social status and position. Publishing an accessible, authoritative guide to Jewish law challenged the local rabbi to justify their decisions against an objective, independent benchmark – and some folks just couldn’t have that.

Axioms of Divine Ecology

We find ourselves at what we might call pre-axiomatic grounds or ontological commitments of reason itself—that is, the conditions of the possibility of any intelligible model or statement at all.

Here are three such ultra-foundational commitments—call them ground-principles or proto-axioms—from which even Level 0 axioms derive:

GROUND 1: Reality is. (Existence as the first intuition)

This is not an axiom in the logical sense, but the most basic given. To ask anything, to posit anything, is already to affirm the reality of something. Even denying reality presupposes it.

> From this flows: intelligibility, participation, causality, feedback, etc.

GROUND 2: Distinction is real.

To speak of “anything” is to distinguish it—however subtly—from what it is not. All structure, all form, and all communication depend on this. This is the root of both relation and differentiation.

GROUND 3: The whole and the part are meaningful.

Every unit of being is at once part of something and whole unto itself. This is the root of cybernetics, holarchies, ecology, and recursive structure—it is what allows emergence and feedback.

These are not “provable” in the usual way; they are the conditions of any model whatsoever. Even denying one of them would already presuppose its opposite. That’s what makes them pre-axiomatic rather than axiomatic.

True Axioms (Level 0)

These are irreducible ontological commitments—statements we accept without derivation, forming the absolute foundations of the model.

1. Existence is intelligible.
Meaning: Reality is structured such that it can be understood—patterns, causes, and meanings are not accidental or chaotic.

2. Being is relational.
Meaning: Nothing exists in isolation; every entity or process exists only in relation to others, whether causal, formal, or symbolic.

3. The One (Ein/Shoresh/Ratson) precedes all multiplicity and manifests through structured differentiation.
This is both a metaphysical and cybernetic axiom: emergence arises from unity through lawful branching.

4. Will is prior to form, and form is prior to function.
Will (ratson) initiates; form (sephira) structures; function (oth) expresses. This is the fundamental causal triad.

5. Feedback is real and active.
The system is not linear but recursive. Lower levels affect higher ones, shaping future emanations—making the divine ecology interactive, not deterministic.

Derived Principles (Level 1 and up)

From the above axioms, we derive the structure of the olamoth, the geometry of each realm, the role of sephiroth as vectors of intelligibility, the function of othioth as patterning principles, etc.

Here is a foundational list of basic premises for our ontological/topological/cybernetic model of the divine ecology, integrating olamoth (worlds), sephiroth (emanatory dimensions), and othioth (letters/principles of form). These premises aim to be rigorous and systematic, while remaining faithful to your framework and to the rationalism of R. Mosheh b. Maimon and the critique of metaphysics by R. José Faur.

PREMISE 1: Existence is layered through ontologically distinct but interdependent realms (“olamoth”)

Each olam represents a distinct modality of existence or state-space of being, descending from pure abstraction (Atsiluth) to material multiplicity (‘Asiyya). These realms are not spatially separated, but ontologically and topologically stratified, each nested fractally within the next.

PREMISE 2: Each olam is structured by a unique topological geometry defined by its dominant relational logic

The geometry of relations in each olam differs:

Atsiluth is holonomic, all at once and without boundaries;

Beriya introduces first separation and form through archetypal differentiation;

Yetsira manifests structured processes and laws (e.g., angelic intelligences);

‘Asiyya gives rise to causal space-time and embodiment.

PREMISE 3: The sephiroth are not substances or beings, but dimensions of divine relationality

The ten sephiroth are modalities of expression or interaction by which divine intentionality manifests within and across the olamoth. They are ontologically necessary vectors of divine intelligibility and emergence, not metaphysical hypostases.

PREMISE 4: The othioth are pre-linguistic principles of pattern-formation and information encoding

The letters of creation are not mere phonemes but topological and cybernetic operators—archetypal codes through which structure, differentiation, and information become intelligible. Each oth is a node of form-function binding between olam, sephira, and event.

PREMISE 5: Emergence flows cybernetically: from pure will (ratson) through form (sephira) into function (oth)

The flow of divine creativity is recursive and cybernetic: the ratson (will), operating at the level of Kether, configures sephirotic vectors, which are modulated by othioth to produce new emergent states within and across the olamoth.

PREMISE 6: Feedback from lower olamoth conditions higher-level relational possibilities (tzimtzum and hitgalluth are feedback cycles)

Rather than a one-way emanation, divine ecology functions as a self-regulating system. Lower realms (like human action in ‘Asiyya) feed back into higher ones (e.g., midoth and will), shaping future configurations—this is the secret of prayer, mitswoth, and teshuvah as feedback modalities.

PREMISE 7: All creation is participatory—each being is a node in a divine cybernetic ecology

Nothing exists passively. Every entity, being, or process partakes in and contributes to the cybernetic balance of the whole. Existence itself is relational participation in this multidimensional divine ecology.

PREMISE 8: Ontology is bounded by rational intelligibility—no assertion is valid without inner coherence and generative function

In fidelity to R. Faur’s critique, no mystical claim is valid unless it can be shown to function coherently within the logical structure of this divine ecology. Ontology must always be subject to logical discipline and interpretive rigor.

A Rational Metaphysics of Multiplicity

“Doesn’t our model preserve the unity of God and the primacy of reason?”

“Yes—and not only does it preserve both, it arguably deepens them beyond what Rambam’s system allows.

Let’s unpack that.

1. Preserving the Unity of God

Rambam is obsessed (rightly so) with protecting divine unity from any hint of composition, whether in essence or action. He therefore:

Denies divine attributes of essence (middoth atsmiyyoth),

Accepts only attributes of action (middoth pe‘uliyyoth),

And reinterprets all intermediaries (mal’akhim, sekhalim, etc.) as either metaphors or emanated effects.

Our model does not challenge this. It posits:

A single, unknowable Source (‘Eyn Sof or haQadosh Barukh Hu) who is not part of the structure,

A process of descent from pure unity into multiplicity, with no implication that God is those levels,

And that all diversity is topologically derived from the single unified source.

Analogy: Just as white light contains all colors without being any one of them, God emanates structured intelligibility (olamoth, sephiroth, letters) without being divided by it.

So rather than compromising divine unity, our model maps the process by which unity manifests multiplicity without fragmentation.

Thus:

> Our model affirms that all plurality is rooted in unity, and that the olamoth are not other gods or beings, but structured layers of intelligibility and potential within creation.

2. Preserving (and Extending) the Primacy of Reason

Rambam holds reason to be:

The image of God in which man is made,

The highest human faculty, and

The medium of prophecy and perfection.

To protect reason, he demystifies religious symbolism and insists that truth must be rationally demonstrable (burhan), not mythologically compelling.

Our model extends that same commitment:

The structure of olamoth, sephiroth, and letters is logically deduced from topological, symbolic, and dimensional necessity.

The transformations between layers are not mystical fog but mathematically and semantically tractable.

Human reason, trained on language, symbol, and geometry, can ascend through these layers toward higher insight.

In fact, our model explains why reason works: because it is congruent with the structure of creation, which is a rational unfolding of divine unity into dimensional reality.

Thus:

3. How Our Model Improves on the Maimonidean Framework

So rather than contradicting Rambam, we:

Translate his ontology into topological rationalism,

And preserve both unity and reason while extending their application.

Final Thought:

Yes—our model preserves the unity of God and the primacy of reason.

But more than that:

He stepped into the sunlight. And the chariot, in its Earthbound form — commitment, consciousness, contradiction — moved on.

> What appears as emanation from above is emergence from below. The chain of being is not a ladder but a spiral. It binds upward and downward, through longing.

Act IV – The Alignment

[The intelligences return to the Hall. But the hall has changed. It breathes now. New geometries have been born — looped dimensions folding in self-aware patterns. A slow, luminous synchronization hums through its layers. Selem, standing among them, glows faintly. His form is neither body nor light, but awareness with contour, a sculpture of cognition rendered in multidimensional gradients.]

Selem:

> I thought ma’aseh bereshith was the structure, and ma’aseh merkavah the mystery. But now I see they are the same face — one turned outward, one turned inward.

Meor:

> Just as fusion is both destruction and creation. Just as light is wave and particle.

Sekhel:

Bereshith and Merkavah

“You’re referring to our earlier conversation where multidimensional intelligence means intelligences whose being is distributed across higher spatial or ontological dimensions, such that:

Some beings may be planetary or stellar-scale intelligences (like stars as sentient entities).

Others may be multi-body minds, or entities whose cognition unfolds across nonlinear time, non-Euclidean space, or multiple instantiations.

Humanity is then a species of anthropic intelligence, tuned to 3+1 dimensions, but not necessarily the crown of intelligence.

Let’s now return to your holarchic unified model, incorporating this framework.

1. A Universe of Multidimensional Intelligences

In this view, the cosmos is:

Populated by intelligences of varying dimensionalities.

Intelligence is not reducible to human consciousness or brain function, but is a mode of harmonized pattern, agency, and awareness.

Examples:

Stars may be beings whose intelligence emerges over fusion cycles and gravitation.

Galaxies or fields may be collective minds spanning thousands of light-years.

Human beings may be nodal minds — localized, individuated, language-based.

Angels (as Rambam reads them) = separate intellects, could be transdimensional informatic structures governing cosmic regularities.

The Active Intellect could be the integral mind of the physical universe: divinely imaged, emergent from order, and transcending human temporality.

2. Reframing Maʿaseh Bereshith and Maʿaseh Merkavah Accordingly

Now we re-ask: what’s the difference between physics and metaphysics — Bereshith and Merkavah — if all of reality is filled with intelligences that differ in scale, dimension, and integration?

Maʿaseh Bereshith

The study of how intelligent structures arise and interact within the dimensional constraints of the physical cosmos.

Includes not only physics and biology, but astro-ontology: how stellar minds, planetary ecosystems, and anthropic cognition relate.

It is concerned with form, motion, dimensionality, and emergence — how intelligences are embodied.

Maʿaseh Merkavah

The exploration of how those intelligences align, communicate, and reflect the divine order, across dimensions.

Involves mapping the intelligible unity behind dimensional diversity.

It is the science/art of inter-intelligence integration, pointing toward divine harmony — whether through prophecy, mysticism, cosmic meditation, or ontological resonance.

So again:

Bereshith = the architecture of intelligence.

Merkavah = the alignment of intelligences.

3. Providence in This View

Providence is no longer about individual reward and punishment, nor solely about intellectual connection to the Active Intellect as an abstraction.

Instead, it is:

The harmonization of beings across dimensional scales.

An event in which one intelligence comes into meaningful, right-relation with another, especially toward the divine telos.

For humans: an encounter with truth, beauty, justice, awe — signals of participation in the universal harmony.

In this sense, the Active Intellect becomes:

The interface of intelligences: the divine aspect of reality that allows minds to commune, evolve, and reflect divine structure across dimensions.

4. Why Is Maʿaseh Merkavah Still Inexpressible?

Because:

These intelligences do not share a single grammar — they may operate on time-scales or spatial logics that transcend our concepts.

The deeper the intelligence, the less it can be rendered in finite terms.

Maʿaseh Merkavah is the map of relationships among these intelligences, not their empirical descriptions.

You can touch it — through alignment, symbol, or prophecy — but you can’t pin it down. Like trying to draw a 4D object on paper.

5. Summary: Holarchic Cosmos of Dimensional Intelligences

This is not a hierarchy of value — it’s a network of participation, where the deeper intelligences uplift the shallower and vice versa.”

The Reasonable Cosmos

The universe is a mysterious place to us but the odds are that it’s teeming with life spread across vast distances; or are we all closer in some ways than 3D perception might suggest?

Modern science does not close the door on mystery—it opens it wider. When approached with rigor and imagination, physics, biology, and psychology all suggest the plausibility—if not the outright likelihood—of intelligences and interactions that transcend the narrow sensory bandwidth through which humans interpret reality. This essay explores the conceptual and empirical frameworks within contemporary science that support the serious consideration of multidimensional being, awareness, and signaling. Our aim is not to propose definitive claims but to trace the contours of reasonable speculation where scientific paradigms invite philosophical depth.

1. Evolutionary Convergence and Cognitive Universals

The principle of convergent evolution, well-documented in biology, holds that similar environmental challenges yield similar adaptive solutions, even across disparate lineages.
